In commemoration of Ian Lenica - sent by Nicole Salomon

Jan Lenica, a pure artist

Jan Lenica was an artist of great culture. He was a film maker, he was the creator of posters, recognized all over the world, and he was a stage-designer.
Jan Lenica worked in several countries, however his inspiration remained deeply Polish. He never accepted compromises. Jan Lenica stayed far from the vanities of the world and profit interests.

When we met him in Annecy, in 1962, we discovered his deep sensitiveness to art and poetry while, as a Jury Member, he expressed his appreciation for George Dunning's film "The Flying man".
Along the years, Jan Lenica received several prizes at the Annecy Festival : the Prize of the International Critique in 1963, for "dabyrinth", and later the Prize Jules Chéret for one of his posters.
In 1985, Jan Lenica created a poster for the 25th anniversary of Annecy and wrote :
"I suggest three definitions for the Annecy Festival :
1) A meal for giants consisting of hors-d'oeuvre only.
2) The profusion of the exeptional.
3) A blister on the eyes (rather nasty, isn't it ?)
Choose your favourite one !"

Jan Lenica was a faithful friend. Our grief and sadness are immense.

    Grimault Square
A Parisian square has been named after a French animation filmmaker. 'Paul Grimault Square', a place full of trees, invites children to come and play there. It practically faces the studio Grimault opened in 1951.
Several young people willing to learn animation have began their career here : Jean-François Laguionie, Jacques Colombat, Jean Rubak, Lionel Charpy... It is also here that Grimault's master piece, the feature cartoon film 'Le Roi et l'Oiseau' (The King and the Bird) was produced.
Address : Place de Rungis, 75013 Paris.

RMCA seeks creative artists/animators in all disciplines - sent by Edward Bakst

"International Animation Progarm" @ the Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design in Denver, Colorado, seeks creative artists/animators in all disciplines, techniques and styles of animation to teach for a period of a term (15 weeks).
Most urgently, we seek creative artists to teach 2d and 3d computer animation (thought we now use Softimage for 3d and numerous packages for 2d, a conciderable talent of the individual candidate may dictate a change to another software such as Maya). Such a person would need to teach both creative thinking as well as use of software.
Experienced candidates in all disciplines can contact Edward Bakst @ <EBakst@rmcad.edu> for information.
Please submit: reel, cover letter, resume, teaching philosophy.
We also seek renowned artists who might be interested in coming here for ASIFA-Colorado presentations of their work, or scholars who wish to present an animation retrospective of a given region, technique, style or kind of thinking."

European Web Animation Competition - sent by NIAF - Caspar de Kiefte

Caspar de Kiefte has sent a very interesting project description. It is a long text, so I reprint here only the first few lines.

The full content of this 24 Oct. 2001-Newsletter can be found at:
    http://asifa.net/netherlands/webanimation.htm

    - The editor of ASIFA.NET.

I would like to inform you about developments concerning the initiative of setting up a Web Animation Competition for students from European Art and Film Academies. The project now has a working title: 'BETWEEN THE LINES'.

This title stems from the choice of setting up a competition for interactive and animated projects; projects that, on closer inspection, are not entirely what they first appeared to be. Stories that have a "hidden" message / truth / reality and only reveal their genuine or entire "story" after intervention by the viewer... "after reading between the lines".

The aim is to receive as wide a variety of entries as possible, from (well-)animated typography, graphics, to short stories. All involving a study of (indirect) communication and interactivity project ---> viewer ---> project
