Zagreb Animation Theory Award for Giannalberto Bendazzi

Besides well-organised animation festivals presenting new tendencies in the art of animation, the scientific analysis and critical review is getting more and more important.

It was a wise decision of the Zagreb festival to install a theory award, in full terms The Zagreb Festival Award for extraordinary achievement in the field of animation theory and almost inevitable to choose Giannalberto Bendazzi as the first laureat for this new prize.

The justification of the Zagreb Festivals says, that the prize goes to "the well known animation historian, book writer, animation teacher and hardworking enthusiast, who is promoting the art of animation throughout the world."

ASIFA also heartly congratulates our ASIFA Member Giannalberto Bendazzi to this well-deserved award.

  From A to Z - Annecy and Zagreb 2002

The two oldest animation festivals, both initiated by the International Animated Film Assiciation ASIFA, take place again in the same year, and even in the same month.
The Annecy Festival was founded in 1960, Zagreb in 1972 and so celebrates this years its 30 years anniversary.

How different the events are today, one might also understand, when comparing the two poster.
(I give no comment here; the editor.    ;-)    )

Heikki Jokinen has written a preview about both events.
You can find the report in the [ FESTIVAL ZONE ] at | Previews | or you click here.

  Stuttgart 2002, between A and Z

Phil Mulloy & Jerzy Kucia
Two lucky prize winners staring at the stars.
The Stuttgart Animation Festival in 2002 celebrated its 20 years anniversary (11th edition).
It definitely belongs to the most important festival, fulfilling the highest quality standards.

I was invited to work in the jury for the Young Animation Competition, but had enough time to enjoy also the high-carat short film competition and one film of the feature film competition.

Here is my report about this enjoyable event.

Emile Reynaud - Theatre Optique
International Animation Day

On 28th of October 1892 Emile Reynaud presented his "Theatre Optique" in the Musée Grévin in Paris. It was the first public screening of animation with a cinematographic apparatus (using handpainted sequences on celluloid strips).

Following the idea of the former ASIFA President Abi Feijo from Portugal, ASIFA proposes to celebrate on this date the International Animation Day.

In 2002 the project the French ASIFA Group AFCA is already preparing a lot of project, and we hope that many people will join the initiative in this and the following years.

San Francisco State's Animation Program and ASIFA-SF present

MIKE BARRIER, IN-PERSON

AUTHOR OF "HOLLYWOOD CARTOONS: AMERICAN ANIMATION IN ITS GOLDEN AGE"
A TALK, SCREENING OF RARE FILMS AND BOOK SIGNING
Monday, June 17 at 7:30 PM

San Francisco State University, August Coppola Theater (Fine Arts Building, Room 101)

Mike Barrier will discuss some of the material in his book and will illustrate his presentation with a screening of some of the films that played an important role in the history of the Hollywood cartoon.. His selection will feature extremely rare works, shown on 16mm film and videotape. The tentative program includes:
  • A Frank Moser-animated Aesop's Fable from early 1928, with a mouse hero and heroine who anticipate Mickey and Minnie's debut a few months later.
  • An early Scrappy with an excellent example of Dick Huemer's eccentric animation.
  • An early sound Oswald with Bill Nolan's animation.
  • An early Terrytoon with Bill Tytla's animation of a giant who is like a rough sketch for the giant in Brave Little Tailor.
  • Rudy Ising's MGM cartoon Home on the Range, followed by the pose reel for that cartoon drawn by Bob Allen.
  • An example of forbidden animation.

WHAT REVIEWERS SAY ABOUT "HOLYWOOD CARTOONS"
Publishers Weekly -
"both a delightful entertainment and a serious study, easily ranking as the definitive overview of the animation industry's accomplishments."
New York Times Book Review - "those who take the art of animation seriously will find this tough- minded book challenging and revelatory."
Washington Post - "a major contribution to our understanding of the work of not only the Disney animators, but also of men like Max and Dave Fleischer, Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera, John Hubley, and the brilliant Warner Bros. crew."
The Economist (London) - "His book is rich in nuggets that bring the era ... vividly to life."
Boston Book Review - "a magical gift."
Copley News Service - "the first full-length, comprehensive history of a uniquely American art form, and one that is likely to become an instant classic."

PBS website about Faith and John Hubley

There is a great new website, about the work of Faith and John Hubley.

PBS (Public Broadcasting Service) has published the page in connection with the documentary film Independent Spirits: The Faith and John Hubley Story, directed by Sybil DelGaudio.

Check it out, it's really phantastic:
http://www.pbs.org/independentspirits
Some little excerpts from the website:

About the film:

INDEPENDENT SPIRITS: The Faith and John Hubley Story looks at the creative partnership and careers of these Academy Award-winning animators. The Hubleys re-defined animation, breaking from traditional styles, confronting important social issues and using innovative graphics and experimental sound.

With their unique blend of intelligence, humor and social commentary, Hubley films were made by animation artists whose ultimate goal was not to have the mouse escape the cat, but "to increase awareness, to warn, to humanize, to elevate vision, to suggest goals, to deepen our understanding of ourselves and our relationship to one another." Their non-traditional techniques - a blend of watercolor, wax crayons, multiple exposures and lighting from beneath the camera - give the films a spontaneous appearance, and emphasize the free-form graphic approach that has characterized Hubley-style animation. As animation historian John Canemaker has written, "This 'happy accident' graphic style forces audiences to fill in the spaces of what is not seen by using their imaginations."

About the director
Sybil DelGaudio

Sybil DelGaudio directed the four-part series ANIMATED WOMEN (ITVS, 1995). The series won recognition at many festivals and museums, and was honored with an Emmy Award and a CINE Golden Eagle. DelGaudio teaches film studies and production at Hofstra University, where she is professor and chair of the Department of Audio/Video/Film. She is a film historian whose reviews and articles are published widely, and she is a frequent speaker and panel moderator on topics relating to film theory and animation.
