| International Animation Day |
ASIFA has proposed an International Animation Day, and the French ASIFA Group (AFCA) has already prepared a full program for several days! More information about this Animation Celebration below - and we hope many other ASIFA Groups will join the project! Animation Celebration in France 25th - 29th of October 2002 (On the occasion of the 1st. International Animation Day, 28th of October) When we heard of ASIFA's initiative last February, we wished to lay an even greater emphasis on this event in France. We thought that one day would be too short... and extended its duration from the 25th to the 29th of October, renaming it "Animation Celebration" (reminding its connection with the 28th of October, the "International Animation Day"). This event has very quickly taken unexpected proportions. It met with great interest and even enthusiasm. In some regions, we witnessed the creation of new showplaces and networks as well as the spontaneous help of new contributors. We do hope that this celebration will actually attract stronger support of animation in France. About 130 showplaces throughout France will participate in this event, with screenings, exhibitions, workshops, demonstrations, meetings or other initiatives, with the support of film archives, cinemas, libraries, associations and festivals (among them Annecy and Clermont-Ferrand), as well as a large number of animation film schools. Two trends appear in the contents of the programmes : Japanese animation (particulary Hayao Miyazaki) and Czech animation benefiting from the Czech cultural season taking place in France this year. We also notice a strong circulation of student films. Among the most honoured French animated filmmakers (exhibitions and screenings) : Emile Reynaud, Emile Cohl, Michel Ocelot and Florence Miailhe. The complete programme will soon be on line on AFCA's web site www.afca.asso.fr |
| ASIFA PRIZE 2002 - for David Ehrlich |
The ASIFA Prize, which is given every year for ourstanding achievements for the art of animation, was given at the ZAGREB 2002 Festival to David Ehrlich. Below you can read the Laudatio, written by Vesna Dovnikovic. (More material will be added later.) ASIFA SPECIAL AWARD Every year the ASIFA Board of Directors gives the Special Award to a person who has made an exceptional contribution to the art of animation. It is with great pleasure we give the special ASIFA Award 2002 to one extraodinary, almost renaissance person from the animation world. Our laureat is animator, film director, sculptor, musician, professor and much more than that. The winner is - DAVID EHRLICH - from the USA. Beside his artistic work, the international animation community is grateful for his longtime unselfish volunteer work on the ASIFA Board of Directors as ASIFA Vice President and for his sucessful activity in the children's animation workshops all over the world. David is emotionally connected with Zagreb and it seemed most proper to award him exactly in Zagreb where he is surrounded with so many friends. The award is created by the famous Estonian animator and painter Priit Pärn. |

| Hiroshima 2002 : Festival Reports by Deanna Morse and Paul Glabicki |
Deanna Morse, USA: "There was much praise for the 9th International Animation Festival in Hiroshima Japan. This year there were several familiar faces, but many new young filmmakers who had come to this festival for the first time. I talked with filmmakers from Australia, England, Turkey, France, Japan, Spain, Canada, and the USA. All agreed that Hiroshima is a great festival for animators: perfectly organized, with a wide range of interesting and diverse programs, and a rich environment with activities and opportunities to meet and greet other filmmakers in attendance. " Paul Glabicki, USA: " The Hiroshima International Animation is an event that touches the soul, informs the mind, and delights the eye. It is an event like no other. It is something to aspire to as a filmmaker, and to enjoy as a lover of art and culture. Congratulations and bravo to Sayoko Kinoshita, the festival staff and officers, the volunteers, the generous (and very wise) sponsors, Mayor Tadatoshi Akiba, and the city and people of Hiroshima! Hiroshima is a miraculous place that is an inspirational beacon of light and hope to the world. The Hiroshima International Animation Festival is a gift to the art of the animated image, and a prestigious event that creates its own miracles every two years. To those who have never been to Hiroshima or a major animation festival - GO! " If you want to read the full reports about this great animation festival, visit ASIFA.NET - Festival Zone. |

| New book: "David Ehrlich - Citizen of the World" |
"Those who visit the world of the frame by frame people can't ignore David Ehrlich. Those who have talked with this man must have been struck by his powerful personality, because David Ehrlich is one of the most complex experimental animation directors we can find. His charisma, his mind half-way between West and East, the inventiveness of his films, and above all, a real humanism that makes him work as much with children as with international directors are part of an unique man who deserves more than a lingering glance. The association of the film analysis and above the enthralling interviews plunge the reader into a colorful, sensual and singularly human world." (From the books' envelope) This new book was written by Olivier Cotte about and - I guess - in close cooperation with David Ehrlich. After a short biography and an "aesthetic study of the films", the book offers a long "dialogue with David Ehrlich" - a conversation between David and Olivier about many aspects of David Ehrlich's art and philosophy; "international contributions" close the book: numerous friends from all over the world give their partly very personal comments about "the Citizen of the World". I also specially like the many nice color plates of film drawings and other artwork, and the many fotos giving insight in David Ehrlich's artistic and private life. A very enjoyable book about a great artist. | New Book: Jeanpaul Goergen - Bibliography about German Animated Film |
"Bibliografie zum deutschen Animationsfilm" - this is the original title of the book by Jeanpaul Goergen. It collects the titles of writing about animated film in Germany as well as German publications about animated film in general. It lists books, as well as e.g. publications of festivals, and other publications (like e.g. from universities, film schools, etc.). It is also indicated at which German Film Library the publications can be found. In his preface Jeapaul Goergen writes, that he hopes that this bibliography may stimulate "animation studies" in Germany, after this film genre has been long time underestimated - compared to feature or documentary film. This bibliogrpahy about animated film is a precious tool to find relevant publications about animation in German language.
