  E d i t o r i a l : The idea of ASIFA.NET.
An open platform for an internationl network of human knowledge and experience.

The idea of the ASIFA Website, and particularily of the news-section, is TO SERVE AS AN OPEN PLATFORM, for all ASIFA Groups, ASIFA Offices and ASIFA members.

What does it mean practically?

It means, that all ASIFA members are invited, to send the material, which they want to be published to the editor@asifa.net, and it will appear at the next up-date.

The coming dates for 2003:
3rd March
1st April
5th May
2nd June
14th July
1st September
6th October
3rd November
15th December

In a similar way the ASIFA Website as a whole may be understood as an "open platform":
ASIFA Groups (like ASIFA Israel, ASIFA Washington, ASIFA USA North-West) can get their free webspace, where they can publish anything they like. The same is valid for all ASIFA Members.

ASIFA Groups and Members Sites are integrated in the ASIFA.NET Website (at asifa.net/groups and asifa.net/members), but can also be visited directly.

If you want to profit from these services, join ASIFA, and send your material to webmaster@asifa.net.

President's Letter: Extraordinary General Assembly at Annecy 2003
Dear Friends and Members of ASIFA !

I hope, you had a good start into the new year, and I wish you (and us all) a happy and peaceful year 2003.

For the future of ASIFA the year 2003 might bring important changes and improvement. Normally this year would be the time for the election of a new ASIFA Board, but the current ASIFA Board decided to hold an Extraordinary General Assembly - at the Annecy Festival in June - in order to take a decision about the proposed change of ASIFA's organisational structure.

What is it about?

The main issue of the proposal is, that in the future the ASIFA Board should be composed of the representatives of all ASIFA Groups and ASIFA Offices (groups with less than 10 members).
This "New ASIFA Board" should then decide about the composition of the "Executive Board", which will be responsible to organise the work and communication within ASIFA. This will be a smaller group of people, who will be responsible for clearly defined working fields.

The main arguments for this new organisational model are:

  • Improvement of international communication and cooperation:

       > > The "New ASIFA Board" invites all our chapters for cooperation, no one will be excluded.

       > > All ASIFA Groups will have a chance to speak for their interests and can get a better identification with the international body.

       > > Through the local group representatives, all ASIFA members will have a connection to the ASIFA Board.

  • Professional management

       > > The "Executive Board" with its clearly defined jobs allows a more professional management of ASIFA's international work.

  • Conclusion of the old Election System, which had the following disadvantages:

       > > The candidates for the ASIFA Board could propose themselves, without any special justification, except being ASIFA member for two years.

       > > Most ASIFA members knew only a very small part of the candidates.

       > > By using the proxies (representatives of big groups could vote in the name of the members in their group) a small group of people had a strong influence on the result of the election.

The current form of the proposal can be found on at: asifa.net/new.structure).

I invite all ASIFA members and all leaders of local ASIFA Chapters, to distribute this material, to initiate discussions, and to give feedback. You can e-mail to me at president@asifa.net, and you can post your opinion on our homepage (the link is also at asifa.net/new.structure).

Finally I want to mention, that this proposal is not "my idea", but the result of numerous discussions with other ASIFA members, with representatives of ASIFA Groups, and with the many people, whom I met at the Open ASIFA Meetings in 2002, which were held during the International Animation Festivals in Stuttgart, Zagreb, Ottawa and Espinho. I only can report, that most of the people at these meetings agreed on the basic idea.

    - One last very important thing:
At an Extraordinary General Assembly we need 50% of the ASIFA members present or represented. (In case 50% is not given, the EGA is to be called 24 hours later, then one third would be sufficient.) Therefore it is very important, that many delegates from the ASIFA Groups come to this meeting, and that they bring enough proxies (other ASIFA members may assign their votes to them.)

    See you in Annecy 2003
    Best wishes

  •   Casa da Animação (Porto); A great project needs our help.
Casa da Animação - the House of Animation - is a great project, for which Porto (European City of Culture in 2001) surely is envied by many other cities in Europe.

I visited Casa da Animação in November 2002, and I met many other people from Italy, United Kingdom, France, Switzerland, Spain, Turkey, and other European countries.
All of us were impressed, fascinated, and happy to see, that here Culture Politics has sponsored an exemplary project. "I would love to have such a culture centre in my town", was the reaction of many of us.

Casa da Animação, with its permanent exhibition of art-work used in animated films (partly donated by world famous authors), its library and video archive, the cinema, the training and production studios, and last but not least, the communicative centre of a little cafeteria is indeed a place extremely rare in the world's scenario of Animation Cinema.

It is a culture centre dedicated to the art of animation, where interested people can meet, can get information, view films, attend international symposiums, and much more.

Now it seems, that this wonderful project, which was started in the context of Porto being the "European City of Culture", is in danger.
ASIFA received three letter from Portugal with more details. They are published on ASIFA.NET at asifa.net/portugal.

In the name of ASIFA I would like to express our full support for "Casa da Animacao".

PS: I ask you all to send your letters of solidarity to:
    Margarida Feijó - marfeijo@esoterica.pt
    Vanessa Ventura - mail@casa-da-animacao.pt

...space for people to meet, to discover the art of animation....

...should this space remain empty in the future???...

      News from ASIFA Croatia:
After many years of difficulties ASIFA Croatia is facing better days.
Thanks to the financial support of the authorities of the City of Zagreb and the precious collaboration with Zagreb Animation Festival and Zagreb Film Studios, ASIFA Croatia has some interesting plans for this year, including the celebration of the International Animation Day on 28th October.

Starting with October 2002, ASIFA Croatia holds regular monthly screenings in the Cultural Information Center in Zagreb accompanied with discussions on different animation topics.

A very successful presentation that attracted a big number of young people, with the subject YOUNG ANIMATORS OF ZAGREB FILM, was held on 21 January. Five young animators shown their films and answered numerous questions by the audience.

They are: Ana-Marija Vidakovic with her film "Picking", Ivana Guljasevic with "Like a Miracle", Stiv Sinik with "The Pet", Daniel Suljic with "The Cake" and Darko Balkiza with "The First Story". Some of those films already won awards at international animated film festivals and indicate a better future of Zagreb animation.
All five films were produced by Zagreb Film.
