The idea of ASIFA.NET : Permanent Call for Papers

The concept of the ASIFA Website, and particularily of the news-section, is TO SERVE AS AN OPEN PLATFORM,      for all ASIFA Groups and Offices,      ASIFA members      and friends of ASIFA. It means, that all are invited, to send the material, which they want to be published to the editor@asifa.net, and it will appear at the next up-date.

International Animation Day (28th October 2004)

In 2002, the International Animated Film Association (ASIFA) launched its International Animation Day to commemorate the first public performance of Emile Reynaud's Optical Theatre at the Grévin Museum in Paris in 1892. The different ASIFA groups, which are represented in about thirty countries in the world, are ready to celebrate this World Day. Though there is not yet an ASIFA group in your country, we nevertheless invite you to join us by screening animated films, organising workshops for the initiation of beginners, exhibiting artwork and stills, providing technical demonstrations... Some of us have taken this opportunity to spread this event over several days (for instance 9 days in France, 5 days in Portugal) involving numerous partners. In 2003, as many as 17O events have taken place in the whole of France. Such a celebration is an outstanding opportunity of putting the animated film in the limelight, as this art is not yet easy of access to quite a large fraction of the public. On this occasion, we will arrange the publication of an original poster and send a press release which will both be shared in common with all those participating in this event. The ASIFA groups will also suggest various programmes of animated films and you will find all particulars on ASIFA.NET. Those programmes will be available to the various participants too. From ASIFA Croatia: Presentation of the film "Ciganjska"

For almost two years ASIFA Croatia has organised regular animation events at Zagreb Cultural Center. On 29th April Vesna Dovnikovic, the President of ASIFA Croatia, presented the authors of the most successful Croatian animated film this year - Davor Medjurecan and Marko Mestrovic whose film CIGANJSKA is the only Croatian film selected for the official competition of ZAGREB ANIMATION FESTIVAL 2004. With undoubtedly high visual quality, good animation and original music, this film means a new start of the Croatian animation, that was in big crisis for more than one decade. Therefore, as expected, this film won the First Prize as best animated film at the National Short Film Festival in March this year in Zagreb. The authors Davor Medjurecan and Marko Mestrovic, as well as the producer Igor Grubic, expressed their wish to join ASIFA Croatia and to actively take part in its activities. FADE-IN, the company that produced "Ciganjska" is the new important factor in the Croatian animation. Vesna Dovnikovic

From ASIFA Romania: 40 years of animation studio "ANIMAFILM"

40 ans de vie du Studio "ANIMAFILM" de Bucarest (1964 - 2004) Un grand Studio, une belle anniversaire cette annee, les 40 ans d"ANIMAFILM, le Studio Cinematographique de Film d'animation de Bucarest - Roumanie! C'est le 1 Juillet 1964, quand la petite section qui existait deja au Studio Cinematographique de film de fiction a BUFTEA (notre Hollywood roumain!), que fut signe la naissance du Studio "ANIMAFILM" par trois grandes personnalites: notre connu metteur en scene ION POPESCU GOPO, MARIN PARAIANU premier directeur du Studio et Monsieur MIHNEA GHEORGHIU - president du Conseil Cinematographique, academicIen qui est actuellement notre President de l'Union des Cineastes de Roumanie. Le Studio "ANIMAFILM" fut organise pour realiser la production nationale des films d'animation, puis eu aussi de nouvelles specialisations comme: films publicitaires, didactiques, commandes speciales etc. C'est ANIMAFILM qui crea de meme, des DIAFILMS et des DIAPOSITIVES sur de differents themes. Pour favoriser le developpement d'une Ecole et d'un style cinematographique roumain dans le domaine du film d'animation, "ANIMAFILM" a groupe les premiers metteurs en scene autour de ION POPESCU GOPO comme: Bob Calinesco, Olimp Varasteanu, Iulian Hermeneanu, George Sibianu, Florin Anghelescu, Nell Cobar, Matty Aslan et d'autres. Ce Studio a ete specialement destine pour stimuler la production du film d'animation et il a constitue le noyau du Centre National d'Animation de Roumanie, centre affilie deja a l'ASIFA. N'oublions pas que c'est 'ANIMAFILM" conduit par Marin Paraianu qui etait aussi Secretaire general ASIFA a l'epoque, avec Monsieur Mihnea GHEORGHIU ont organise les editions du FESTIVAL INTERNATIONAL de MAMAIA, BELLE VILLE AU BORD DE LA Mer Noir, editions alternatives avec les festivals d'Annecy, dans les annees paires - 1966, 1968, 1970. Le realisateur Ion Popescu Gopo ouvra le chemin, car c'est lui qui recu le "Palme D'Or" en 1957 au festival de Cannes; puis nombreux realisateurs d"ANIMAFILM ont eu des prix et ont ete presents aux palmares des festivals Internationaux d'Europe. Nous eumes aussi comme directrice du Studio ANIMAFILM madame Lucia Olteanu-Utan ecrivain de nombreux livres, qui sut donner avec sensibilite et psychologie en developpement, surtout pour les scenarios des films de serie pour enfant et pour les films d'auteur. Je desire souligner que dans ce STUDIO il y avait une atmosphere tres positive de creation. Etant donne que je travaille pendant 30 ans a ANIMAFILM, je sais que nous sommes arrives a une production de 60 films par an (dessin anime, carton decoupe, poupees,etc.) qui apporta a l'Etat par "Romaniafilm" les meilleurs resultats financiers de la Cinematographie Roumaine de cette periode. L'adresse de la rue Olteni nr.45 etait connue par la majorite des membres ASIFA du monde…malheureusement a la fin des obscures annees 80' plus exactement en 1987 (l'ete), les deux belles maisons qui abritaient les Studios ANIMAFILM furent demolies. Apres la fameuse date de Decembre 1989 - la Revolution apres la chute du Mur de berlin, notre production disparait doucement, doucement. Apres, l'animation roumaine continue quand meme dans des Studios comme: "DACODAC" (prestation de service) qui a ete conduit par Adela CRACIUNOIU (membre ASIFA) a present "CARTOON STUDIO" (3D); 'ANIMA-ART" ayant comme manager notre collegue Mihai SURUBARU (membre ASIFA)etc,. Heureusement qu'une autre collegue Manuela HODOR (membre ASIFA) a eu la force de garder le nom celebre d'ANIMAFILM, qu'elle conduit a present, en essayant de continuer la belle tradition de ce Studio. Mais nous soyons pas pessimistes, l'animation roumaine renait. Aidee par l'Union des Cineastes qui organise chaque annee une selection de film pour decerner des prix aux meilleurs, voila que le 1 Mars 2004, notre collegue Dinu SERBESCU (membre ASIFA) avec son film "Pilules Humoristiques" et la jeune Cristina MITITELU avec "La petite fille aux allumettes" ont recu les prix pour l'animation. Avec l'aide du Centre National de la Cinematographie nous avons eu la joie que le realisateur Radu IGAZSAG (membre ASIFA) professeur a l'Universite nationale d"Art- Theatre et Film, qui prepare des jeunes pour l'animation, donc la nouvelle generation, a presente en premiere a l'Institut Francais de Bucarest, son film "BOBORUL" ("LE POPULO") version amusante, inspireee d'apres une histoire celebre du grand ecrivain, dramaturge roumain, Ion Luca CARAGIALE. Ce film a ete envoye deja aux Festivals de Zagreb, Annecy et Hiroshima. Une autre realisatrice - Tatiana APAHIDEAN (membre ASIFA) - qui a travaille aussi a "Animafilm", finit son film "Ensemble", film pour les petits, mais qui condamne le triste phenomene de la pollution de la Terre. Je signale l'apparition d'un livre interessant pour nous, ecrit par le realisateur Ion TRUICA (membre ASIFA) qui a travaille aussi au Studio ANIMAFILM et qui se nomme "LA POETIQUE DU FILM D'ANIMATION". The wonderful animation festival ZAGREB 2004 is coming soon

With a great pleasure we may remind you, that the great animation festival in Zagreb is coming soon, the festival dates are 14 - 19 June 2004. The International Animated Film Association must also express its highest gratitude to this "ASIFA Partner Festival", which is offering full invitation (festival pass, hotel room and meals) to the representatives of our ASIFA Groups. Only this great support makes it possible, that ASIFA Board Meetings with representatives from many countries can take place. This year we are also very happy to welcome many representatives from US Groups. (Other ASIFA Partner Festivals, which also give their generous support to ASIFA in the same way are the festivals in Hiroshima and Espinho.)
